Carefor's sweet - and charitable - tooth reveals itself yet again
It's not uncommon for someone to assume that when employees and volunteers at Carefor talk about their work in and around the community, they are referring to their efforts to improve the quality of life for seniors in Ottawa, Pembroke, Cornwall, and surrounding counties.
Although Carefor does have a number of special programs and services tailored to the needs of seniors and people living with dementia, we also are involved with people of all ages.
A popular example of this involvement with youth is that each year at this time, Carefor supports the Storefront School's annual bake sale. This year alone, more than $260.00 was raised for the school through the purchase of treats such as brownies and cookies, as well as all twelve of the school's savoury carrot cakes by Carefor employees.
This simple act of charity is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of Carefor's support of the Storefront School however. Over the past 10 years, Carefor has opened its doors to a number of students from the school in order to help them gain valuable cooperative work experience within an office environment. As the school services 19-21 year old adults whom live with developmental disabilities, this unique opportunity to work in an office setting with minimal supervision greatly enhances their sense of self-confidence as well as boosting their morale and, most importantly, giving them a much-needed foot in the door at professional places of work.
This story should be no surprise to anyone at Carefor however, as we have had the pleasure of working with such talented individuals as Matthew Clark. Matthew graduated from the school and now works at the Bulk Barn, but has been volunteering with Carefor's administration department one afternoon a week for the past 5 years.
We look forward to many years of working alongside the talented teachers and graduates at the school, as well as the many delicious treats that await us next holiday season.
