Nationals paying tribute to Royals

Published on January 03, 2018

The return of the Royals? Well, it’s often talked about. They’ll be back. In spirit at least. For a day.

The Cornwall Nationals of the FHL will pay tribute to this city’s beloved former major junior hockey team in a game on Jan. 13.

The Nationals host the Watertown Wolves in the FHL contest, on Cornwall Royals Night.

“We know how loved the Royals are in this city and we wanted to find a way to bring that excitement back to town. We really wanted to celebrate a team that is still so relevant to this day,” said Nationals Sales and Marketing manager Shannon Ferguson.

Players on the Nationals will be wearing replica jerseys for the game, which will be auctioned off for Carefor Hospice Cornwall.

“Hospice helps so many people and they rely so heavily on fundraising that it was easy for us to choose one of our biggest games of the year to give back to them.

Adding in the proceeds we raise through auctioning off the game-worn replica jerseys that night will also drastically increase what we are able to donate,” said Ferguson.

In addition, Royals alumni will be celebrated during the game’s opening ceremony.

The Nationals have one game prior to Royals night, and it’s a home contest. It’s a rare Sunday evening game for the Nats, with the North Shore Knights visiting, 7:30 p.m. at the civic complex.

The Nats sit first overall in the six-team FHL, wth a record of 12-4-0-2.
