Telethon for Hospice tops the million mark

Published on November 05, 2017

The Carefor Hospice Cornwall looked like a million bucks on TV on Saturday afternoon.

It was the ninth annual Telethon for Hospice, held live on YourTV, and the total amount of money raised over the nine editions went over the $1 million mark.

When the telethon was started in 2009, that’s not something that organizers imagined would happen so quickly.

“No, we sure didn’t,’’ Carefor Hospice Cornwall fundraising co-ordinator Sandy Collette said. “It shows the support we’ve received from the community over the years.’’

Last year’s total raised of $159,000 brought the eight-year cumulative total to close to $900,000.

Collette confirmed in mid-afternoon on Saturday that this year’s event had already raised in excess of $100,000. By the end of the telethon, the total had risen to $155,000 — and it’ll climb in the coming days and weeks.

“Historically we receive quite a few (pledge dollars) in the following weeks,’’ Collette said on Sunday.

The telethon had a dozen volunteers answering phones during what was a six-hour live telecast. There was entertainment televised throughout the afternoon, and numerous special guests, including testimonials from family members who’ve had loved ones stay at the hospice.

“This is our signature (fundraising) event,’’ Collette said.

It’s the only residential hospice in the eastern counties, and the telethon is the largest fundraiser for it each year.

The hospice receives only partial government funding, and needs to raise $600,000 its own each year. Funding goes to programs that include several relatively new ones, such as the Caregiver Program, which assists people who’ve been helping family members.

Collette also noted other new initiatives including the Bereavement Group, and the Day Away Program, with outings and activities for individuals in palliative care.

The Carefor Hospice Cornwall facility is located at 1507 Second Street West, and it provides end-of-life care in a home-like setting to residents of Cornwall, SDG and Prescott-Russell.

Over 1,250 clients have used the 10-bed facility since it opened in 2009.
