On behalf of the Board of Directors, CEO Bob Cerniuk, the staff and volunteers at Carefor, we wish you and your family a Happy New Year. May it bring gifts of joys and good health!

Last year, we were able to help more than 10,000 families in our local community. We are grateful for the warm testimonials they send us.

Making decisions in planning for someone living with Alzheimer’s or dementia can be a challenging journey, not only for the person diagnosed but also for their family members and support network.

Each day can bring new demands and challenges as you help the person cope with changing levels of ability and new patterns of behavior. However, the more information and community support services you have, the better you can navigate the demands ahead.

Over 10,000 people live with Alzheimer’s in Ottawa. The disease not only affects the memory but also the personality, the communications skills, the ability to socialize, and the mood.

Today, we still do not know the cause of the disease. However, we know it’s not a normal aging process. Learn more about the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.

Chronic disease self-management is about people being actively involved in their own health care to maximize their own quality of life. Barriers often stand in our way preventing us from making better choices about such things as what we eat or whether we exercise.

To assist people with leg and foot ulcers, Carefor is introducing new tools to support clients in their decision making.

The fall of 2011 was fairly mild in Ottawa. However, we know winter will be cold and snowy. The frosty winter weather transforms the city and a whole new range of seasonal activities present themselves.

Are you ready for cold weather? Do you know the signs of hypothermia, and what to do if you get frostbite?
