Cook (Hospice Cornwall)

Position(s): Part Time (30 hours per month, every 2nd weekend)

Location: Hospice Cornwall

 

Summary of Function:

To prepare small, balanced and appetizing meals for Hospice patients.

  • To follow standardized recipes and safe handling procedures and menu cycle.
  • Prepare meats, desserts, soups, sauces, vegetables, salads, eggs and luncheon items according to the menu and hours of service.  Taste and smell foods to determine quality and palatability.
  • Review leftovers for effective and safe re-usage.
  • Supervision of meal service to patients.
  • Portioning and garnishing of menu items.
  • Thaw meat and other frozen foods as required for menu item preparations.  Keep freezer in good order.
  • Ensure all foods are received, covered, labelled, dated and stored properly.
  • Post bi-weekly menu in servery.
  • Turning all cooking equipment on and off; safe operation of all equipment.
  • Assume responsibility for ordering of specific provisions.
  • Clean and sanitize work areas etc. as required by the Board of Health sanitary procedures.
  • Ensure thorough clean-up of kitchen before end of shift.
  • Complete all records as instructed by the Hospice Manager/Volunteer Coordinator.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Hospice Manager/Volunteer Coordinator

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Grade 12 education.
  • Food Handlers Certificate and/or equivalent.
  • Minimum 1 year experience in General Food Service work with excellent references.
  • Good knowledge of food preparation.
  • Experience must include: baking and soup preparation/entrée/desserts.

Experience:

  • Have demonstrated knowledge in: 
    • Use of standardized recipes
    • Infection control and sanitization
    • Cost effective food production, receiving and storage.

Skills:

  • Must be able to communicate well, both written and verbal in English and French
  • Good assessment skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work variety of hours, days, evening and weekends
  • Ability to bend, stand, kneel for short periods of time

The successful candidate will be prepared to commence employment as soon as possible.
