From the Desk of the CEO

Being selected to lead a 120 year old organization is a tremendous honor and having just completed my first 30 days as Carefor’s newly appointed CEO, it is an appropriate time to pause and reflect upon our recent past while also looking ahead to what the future might hold for our agency.

 

It was with mixed emotions that I transitioned into my new role with Carefor. This is an exciting time for me personally and for our organization as we are well positioned to continue to provide professional, high quality and compassionate care and services to our clients throughout the Champlain region. This summer has also been a period of change for many of us with perhaps the biggest change being the well-deserved retirement of Carefor’s long time CEO Bob Cerniuk. Bob’s style was the epitome of servant leadership as he genuinely believed in the value of every individual’s contributions in making a difference in our clients’ lives. Bob’s patience, generosity and mentorship will be missed tremendously but his legacy will continue on.

The community health care sector is a dynamic environment presenting many challenges to organizations like Carefor that are striving for high quality person centered care. However, in challenges exist opportunities for successful outcomes and we will continue to be flexible in adapting to a continuously evolving health care environment.  What will not change is our ongoing focus in providing the best possible service to our clients and their families while also supporting our greatest assets – Carefor’s staff and volunteers.   

I know that with your support and continued belief in Carefor’s Mission, Vision and Values, together we can successfully navigate any challenges that may lie ahead.  I am committed to building a collaborative and high performance team at all levels and across the organization from Eastern Counties, through the City of Ottawa to all of Renfrew County.   

How will we accomplish this? 

  • By promoting innovation;
  • Through open and respectful communication;
  • By supporting education and employment opportunities that enhance the skills of employees and volunteers; 
  • In the cultivation of a professional, cross functional management team that engages and mobilizes everyone to achieve strategic and operational outcomes;
  • By embracing the governance leadership provided by the Board of Directors. 

My initial focus in this new role will be to begin building effective working relationships with key stakeholders, assessing Carefor’s accreditation preparation and the various related work plans, developing a balanced budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year, and supporting the formulation of our next strategic plan. At Carefor Eastern Counties, we anticipate significant program growth in the coming year while in Renfrew County we have just launched a major year-long capital renovation at the Civic Complex to retrofit the facility with a sprinkler system. And finally, in Ottawa the potential for new service expansion is being considered at our Richmond Care Home residence as well as our Carling Adult Day Program.

 

I am passionate about our organization and I feel strongly that together we can make a significant and lasting impact that will best position Carefor to take on new opportunities, set future strategic directions and grow and develop the organization in a prudent and fiscally responsible manner.
